GRADUATE RESEARCH ASSISTANT - Development position

The LANL Research Library (http://library.lanl.gov) has a current position open for a graduate research assistant. We offer a creative setting in which information technologies are applied to scientific productivity. We have an internationally renown active digital library research and development program where we focus on delivery of information to the researchers’ desktops. We aggressively pursue new ideas, services, products, and approaches to satisfy our customer research needs. The successful candidate will actively partner with Laboratory researchers in support of our mission to facilitate access to and enhance the usability of information.

We are seeking an individual who is prepared to make significant contributions in an exciting, fast-changing environment. This position requires a person with a strong interest in taking initiatives and risks, who adapts well to change, works cooperatively on a team, and has a strong interest in fostering customer relationships.

Project Summary

The Research Library is looking for candidates to actively develop and improve electronic products for our customers. There are several current projects that are relevant to accomplishing this. The Graduate Research Assistant will work in a team learning environment in one or more of the following areas:

  • Work with a development team to convert metadata records into XML. Apply XML principles to map and code different Web based formats.
  • Support Special Effects (SFX) dynamic linking to external collections. This entails participation and support of the special effects linking prototype developed by Herbert Van de Sompel from the University of Gent. This work is significant for both publishers and libraries because it allows the user to determine connections of interest. (See http://library.lanl.gov/lww/)
  • Work with a research team to generate products that allow customers to customize and focus on information from digital library databases. In this collaborative project we are currently developing a computational testbed to deploy the TalkMine adaptive recommendation environment, as well as other algorithms and experiments.   • Assist Library staff in technical projects supporting the research and development of integrated electronic products. Potential project assistance includes providing programming support for databases currently maintained for Library products. Programming skills used in the projects include Perl, Java and C or C++. Web services design and implementation require knowledge of HTML4.0, Javascript and CGI scripts.

Required Skills, Knowledge, Abilities:

  • Excellent written communication skills.
  • Excellent oral communication skills

Desired Skills, Knowledge, Abilities:

  • Experience with electronic database projects.
  • Experience programming in either Perl, Java, C or C++
  • Experience writing HTML4.0, Javascript or CGI scripts
  • Experience effectively working in a learning environment.
  • Experience prioritizing and managing multiple tasks while meeting deadlines.

Education, Training, or Licensing:

Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Science or Library Science.
