Fighting Hunger in America through Food Stamps

The Food Stamp Program helps more than 20 million low-income Americans access healthy food every year.  Food stamp outreach is critical to reaching those low-income people who are not aware that they may be eligible for, or don't know how to apply for program benefits.

What is food stamp outreach?
Food stamp outreach is providing information or assistance to someone who might be eligible for the Food Stamp Program (FSP).  The goal of food stamp outreach is to help someone make an informed decision whether to apply for the program, and ultimately to increase participation by eligible people.
Why is it important to reach eligible people with the Food Stamp Program (FSP)?
The FSP helps low income people buy the food they need for healthier diets.  FSP participants with limited food resources have more freedom to buy healthier, nutrient-dense foods, such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains.  Consuming healthier foods helps low income people and their families stay well and have the energy they need for today's active lifestyle.
Who can do food stamp outreach?
You!  Friends, parents, relatives, neighbors, employers, grocers, social workers, teachers, nutritionists, health workers... Anyone, really!
What are some examples of outreach?
Here are just a few examples of outreach:
  • Start a postering campaign.  Hang posters on the wall of your food bank or office or make written information available to your clients. Order FNS materials at no cost.

  • Share information.  Inform potentially eligible low-income persons about the Food Stamp Program

  • Get online.  Help a friend or relative navigate the online pre-screening tool

  • Get in the car.  Drive a neighbor to the nearest food stamp office to apply

  • Partner with your local media.  Get your local radio or television station to air a public service announcement.

  • Partner  with a grocery retailer.  Work with a local grocery store to set up a table with applications and information about the Food Stamp Program.

  • Make it easier for your employees.  Make a computer available in a work break room so that employees can pre-screen themselves for food stamps

  • And much more-- use your creativity!  For examples and guidance from local communities, see promising practices and lessons learned.  Also, browse our food stamp outreach Resource Center for materials, outreach guides, and more.
