Quick Help

  • Your query will be run against Federal Employees' Group Life Insurance Program handbook. If you wish to search other portions of the Federal insurance programs web site go to the Insurance Search Page.

  • This search facility will search for any words appearing in each web page (commonly occurring joining and modifying words excluded).

  • Use a Free Text Query if you want to enter a query using natural language. The search engine will examine your query, extract nouns and noun phrases and construct a query for you.

With free text queries you can enter any text you want, from a proper question, to a string of words and phrases, without worrying about the query language. For example, if you type in the following query:

"What are the requirements for court leave?"

Index Server will create a query for you automatically and begin the search. Note that when you're using free text queries, the regular query language features are disabled and keywords such as AND, OR, and NEAR are interpreted as normal words.

    If you DON'T use a Free-Text Query . . .

    • If you put more than one word in the search box, the search engine will look for documents containing all of those words in any location, but it you put quotation marks around them, it will look only for documents with that exact phrase.

    • Make use of NEAR, AND NOT, and OR to help to refine your search.

      • If you use NEAR between words, the returned pages are ranked in order of proximity — the closer together the words are the higher the rank of the page.
      • AND NOT will return documents containing the first word but exclude those containing the second word.
      • OR will return documents containing either word.

    • If you place an ASTERISK immediately following a search term it will look for all prefixes. For example, key* will find key, keying, keyhole, keyboard, and so on. TWO ASTERISKS will return all forms of the word. For example, sink** will find sink, sinking, sank, and sunk.
