National Program of Cancer Registries

NPCR Participation in the CONCORD Study

In 2000, 12 state registries that are part of the CDC's National Program of Cancer Registries (NPCR) began participating in Phase I of the CONCORD Study—an international collaborative project designed to obtain comparable estimates of cancer survival in Europe and North America. Data from 47 population-based cancer registries are being used in this study.

These 12 NPCR registries are currently linking data for breast, prostate, and colorectal cancer incidence cases diagnosed between 1990 and 1994 with data from the National Death Index (from the National Center for Health Statistics) in order to obtain vital statistics information for cancer patients through 1999.

In 2001, CDC also funded eight NPCR registries to participate in Phase II of the CONCORD Study. During Phase II, detailed clinical data will be extracted from medical records for a random sample of breast, prostate, and colorectal cancer patients diagnosed in 1997 and having a 3-year follow-up period. The goal of this study is to determine the extent to which differences in stage at diagnosis and treatment account for regional and international differences in survival.
