 Preventing Hantavirus Disease video cover

Learn how you can prevent getting a highly fatal disease in this video. You can view it as a series of web pages with accompanying sound and video clips, download it, or order a copy.

What the video is about
In 1993, a new hantavirus was identified in the United States. The virus causes hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) and is transmitted by several rodent species, primarily the deer mouse. The chances of people getting this disease are very low. However, the consequences of getting it are serious. The major symptoms may not appear until the illness becomes life-threatening.

In the videotape, people who have survived HPS describe what it is like to have this illness. Also, doctors and scientists who have had first-hand experience with the disease discuss the following topics

  • symptoms
  • transmission
  • risk factors
  • treatment
  • prevention
