Overweight Among Adults

Obesity has reached epidemic proportions among Americans in all age groups. Obesity (body mass index of 30 kg/m2 or greater) among adults has doubled since 1980. People who are overweight or obese are at increased risk for heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis-related disabilities, and some cancers. The direct and indirect costs attributable to overweight and obesity in the United States in 2000 was $117 billion.

  • Obesity causes an estimated 300,000 premature deaths a year.
  • According to the latest weight guidelines, more than 57% of American adults were overweight by self-reported height and weight in 2000.
  • Men were more likely than women to be overweight according to self-reported height and weight.
  • In 2000, the percentage of adults who reported being overweight ranged from 48% in Colorado to 62% in Mississippi.
