Self-Study Modules on Tuberculosis

Return to Self-Study Modules Main Menu

Introduction

The Self-Study Modules on Tuberculosis are a series of educational modules designed to provide basic information about tuberculosis in a self-study format. This course is offered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Target Audience

The target audience for this course is entry-level public health workers who have little or no background in tuberculosis, such as newly hired outreach workers in health department tuberculosis or sexually transmitted disease programs. This course is also appropriate for staff of correctional facilities, drug treatment centers, migrant clinics, nursing homes, homeless shelters, or other facilities serving persons with or at risk for tuberculosis.

About the Modules

The self-study package includes five modules, an introduction, and a glossary.

You will notice that Module 3 is considerably longer than the other modules. You may choose to study Module 3 in two parts, completing Diagnosis of Tuberculosis Infection in one session and Diagnosis of Tuberculosis Disease in another.

Each module contains the following sections:

  • Background: Background information to help you understand the purpose of the module
  • Objectives: A guide to the information you should learn from the module
  • New Terms: A list of terms that are introduced in the module and listed in the glossary
  • Reading Material: The reading material for the module, including diagrams, charts, illustrations, and photographs
  • Study Questions: Sets of questions, spread throughout the reading material, designed to help you assess how well you have learned the content of the module. Be sure to take advantage of these valuable exercises because they will help you prepare for the final examination. Answers are provided at the end of the module so that you can check your work.
  • Case Studies: Case studies designed to help you apply the concepts you have learned in the module. Answers are provided at the end of the module so that you can check your work.
  • Summary: A description of key points in the module
  • Additional Reading: A list of references for additional information
