USGS Joins Circle of Cultures University of Mary Bismarck, North Dakota October 22-31 The U.S. Geological Survey will be part of the ninth of 15 Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Signature Events, "Circle of Cultures: Time of Renewal and Exchange," held in Bismarck, October 22-31. With this theme, local organizers aim to highlight the culture of the ancient peoples of North Dakota. The event commemorates Lewis and Clark's extended stay with the Mandan and Hidatsa Indians in this area during the winter of 1804-05. At the event stage of the Tent of Many Voices USGS scientists will give public presentations comparing scientific activities conducted by Lewis and Clark to present day USGS science projects. The Survey will also staff an educational exhibit booth that illustrates the legacy of natural science that followed from the first Federally-funded exploration of the American West. The booth will feature maps of the Lewis and Clark route, USGS museum pieces, a replica of a log line used to measure river currents, Lewis and Clark "drinking water," and further information about the range of USGS science.
