Report Description

Health, United States presents national trends in health statistics on such topics as birth and death rates, infant mortality, life expectancy, morbidity and health status, risk factors, use of ambulatory and inpatient care, health personnel and facilities, financing of health care, health insurance and managed care, and other health topics.

The report includes a chartbook and trend tables that may be viewed and printed using Adobe Acrobat.  Trend tables are also available as downloadable spreadsheet files for data manipulation or graphical analysis. Data trends may be more complete in spreadsheet files than in pdf files.

The Preface describes changes and additions to the current report.  Major findings are presented in the Highlights. Appendixes include Data Sources and Definitions and Methods. The Index is a topical index with cross references to such topics as child and adolescent health, elderly population, nutrition related, specific race and ethnic groups, State data, and women's health.

Current and previous editions are available through this Web site, starting with Health, United States, 1975.

Hints for Easy Use

To meet the needs of different users of Health, United States, 2003 the report is available on our Web site in three different pdf formats in addition to a spreadsheet format: the complete report format contains the report as printed in September 2003 in its entirety; the chartbook format contains only the Chartbook on Trends in the Health of Americans; and the individual trend table format contains trend tables as 151 individual pdf files including some UPDATED TABLES. Additionally, trend tables are available as spreadsheet files.

The complete report format is designed for users interested in viewing the entire original report as printed in September, 2003 (chartbook, 151 trend tables, highlights, and appendixes). Because this pdf contains the complete book it is quite large. For the convenience of users the same information is available separated into smaller pdfs- see chartbook pdf and individual trend table pdf below.

Note: Because this is the original report, this format does not contain updated tables (See the individual trend table format below for updated tables).

The best way to begin working with the complete report pdf is by clicking on the third entry “Contents” in the left-hand bookmarks window of the Adobe Acrobat Reader and opening the Table of Contents for the report. Clicking on any entry in the Table of Contents opens that section of the report. For example, clicking on “List of Trend Tables” opens a comprehensive list of tables and clicking on any table title opens that table in the report. At the end of the Table of Contents is the Index to the trend tables.

The chartbook format contains the Chartbook on Trends in the Health of Americans. This format is useful for viewing/printing/downloading individual charts or the entire chartbook. This format is handy for downloading a copy of the chartbook onto a pc or laptop.

The individual trend table format contains separate pdf files for each of the 151 trend tables, highlights, and appendixes and is a convenient method for viewing/printing/downloading individual tables or sections of the report. Because the trend tables in this format are available individually they are more easily accessed by users with limited computer capability. Some tables contained in this format were updated since Health, United States, 2003 was published. To receive an e-mail notification of the availability of table updates join our listserv.

Trend tables are also available as downloadable spreadsheet files for further data manipulation or graphical analysis. Spreadsheet files contain all of the updated tables. The spreadsheet format has the following advantages: For some trend tables additional years of data, which did not fit on the pdf page, may be available. For selected tables standard errors are available in the spreadsheet files.
