Welcome to the Salmon-Challis National Forest

The Salmon-Challis National Forest covers over 4.3 million acres in east-central Idaho. Included within the boundaries of the Forest is 1.3 million acres of the Frank Church-- River of No Return Wilderness Area, the largest wilderness area in the Continental United States. Rugged and remote, this country offers adventure, solitude and breathtaking scenery. The Forest also contains Borah Peak, Idaho's tallest peak, the Wild & Scenic Salmon. River and the Middle Fork of the Salmon River. The area is a highly desired destination for hunting, fishing, white-water rafting and many other popular recreational pursuits.

4 Rivers Lottery -- 2005 Boating Season


Seasonal Road Closures -- September is the month when seasonal closures begin on some roads on the Salmon-Challis National Forest. These closures occur annually and are for wildlife security and/or erosion control reasons as stated in the Salmon or Challis National Forest Travel Plans. -more-

Additional Firewood Cutting Areas Available -- Beginning Thursday September 9 four roads previously behind locked gates will be open for fuelwood gathering on the Salmon/Cobalt Ranger District. Spur roads 300 A, 301A, 326 and 326A, within the former Missouri Gulch Timber Sale area, have been closed for several years and will be open for about 4 weeks this fall. -more-
