GOHS and Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) Youth Project
PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION
Young drivers have a higher rate of crashes, injuries and fatalities
than older drivers. In 2000,
106 people were killed in crashes involving at least one driver ages
16-17; 194 people were killed in crashes with at least one driver ages
18-20; and 234 people were killed in crashes with at least one driver ages
21-24. The economic cost to
Georgia was $91 million for drivers ages 16-17, $167 million for drivers
ages 18-20, and $201 million for drivers ages 21-24.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
The Georgia Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) and the Students Against
Destructive Decisions (SADD) Youth Project formed an alliance in order to:
- Establish a coordinated and comprehensive statewide youth highway
safety program;
- Utilize SADD chapters to promote youth traffic safety initiatives
statewide, in the areas of underage drinking, traffic safety including
speed and aggressive driving, seat belt usage, bicycle/motorcycle and
pedestrian safety;
- Increase the number of schools and students participating in highway
safety initiatives; and
- Include the youth of Georgia as part of a proactive solution to the
problem of teen crashes, injuries and fatalities.
STRATEGIES AND ACTIVITIES
The youth project incorporated the following strategies and activities:
- Train students to be peer educators regarding highway safety issues.
- Develop a statewide leadership council comprised of students to
establish and promote highway safety programs.
- Plan an annual youth highway safety/leadership conference for
students across Georgia.
RESULTS
Georgia SADD has 38 active chapters funded by GOHS with more than 300
members. A number of programs were initiated in the schools, including a
Safe Driver’s Awareness Day, the American Automobile Association (AAA)/GOHS
Teen Governor’s Challenge Safety Belt Initiative, and Click it or
Ticket. The first conference was a huge success.
