2001 Annual Report
What was your most significant accomplishment this past year?
D. Progress Report This report serves to document research conducted under a specific cooperative agreement between ARS and the University of Georgia Research Foundation. Additional details of research can be found in the report for the parent project 6645-21000-017-32T, Development of low- saturated substitutes for partially hydrogenated soybean oil. Breeding efficiency often is limited during selection of phenotypes that are governed by multiple gene systems. Attaining desired gene combinations may be accelerated by use of DNA markers for rapid movement of genes into elite germplasm, and knowledge of the location of these genes in the soybean genome. Considerable progress has been made toward developing breeding populations for selection of a low-saturated substitute for partially hydrogenated soybean oil. Agronomic lines with this oil characteristic are attained in a step-wise manner. Genetically diverse varieties adapted to and within each maturity zone ensure the widest possible production base for soybeans with improved oil quality. Objective 1. Map the location of genes conditioning palmitic, linolenic, and oleic acid content. Objective 2. Develop Maturity Group VI, VII, and VIII soybean varieties that contain oil with less than 7% total saturated fatty acids plus less than 4% linolenic acid. Objective 3. Develop Maturity Group VI, VII and VIII soybean germplasm and varieties that contains oil with less than 7% total saturated fatty acids, 30 to 55% oleic acid, plus less than 4% linolenic acid.
