.Cooperative Observer Program

The Cooperative Observer Program run by the National Weather Service is considered one of the largest volunteer programs in the U.S.. This network of dedicated weather observers help to supplement the current NWS data network by providing additional weather information for locations that are not covered by the NWS. In fact, there are some observers who have been with the NWS Co-Op program for 40 years!

.National Climatic Data Center

The National Climatic Data Center (in Asheville, NC) offers climatological data on-line. NCDC provides data for all 50 states. You can also reach the NCDC at this telephone number (828) 271-4800. Be warned...there will be a service charge for any hardcopies of any data requested. NCDC is also the source for any and all court certified weather documents! The individual Weather Service Offices in the field cannot provide court certified weather documents.

The National Climatic Data Center has a webpage where you can search for storm events by state, county, event type/size, number of injuries/fatalities and/or amount of property/crop damage. This database (as of 3/16/04) contains severe weather reports from 1/1/50 thru 12/31/03.

Search the NCDC Storm Event database to find various types of storms recorded in your county or use other selection criteria as desired.

.Southern Region Climate Center

Another source for climotalogical data for areas in and around Southeast Texas is the Southern Region Climate Center (SRCC) located on the campus of Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA. SRCC provides climatological data for most of the southern states and may be easier to get to than NCDC. You can also reach the SRCC at this telephone number (225) 388-5021.

.Office of the State Climatologist for Texas

The Office of the State Climatologist for Texas (OSC) is a component of the Texas A&M; Department of Meteorology and the Texas Center for Climate Studies (TCCS), having close links with the National Climatic Data Center and the Global Historical Climate Group in Asheville, North Carolina. OSC retains alarge data base covering Texas and southern states and, as well as publishing regular reports and monographs, undertakes research on climate patterns and applied meteorology.
