Quick Stats

  1. Labor force is defined as all persons age 16 and over working or looking for work. A person is employed if he or she is working for pay; worked in their own business or profession or on their own farm; or worked 15 hours or more as an unpaid worker in a family-operated enterprise.

  2. In 2003, 68,272,000 women were in the civilian labor force, 64,404,000 of whom were employed.

  3. In 2003, women's labor force participation rate was 59.5 percent. In other words, 59.5 percent of women age 16 and over were working or looking for work in 2003. Women comprised 47 percent of the total labor force (male and female) in 2003.
