Who We Are
The National Clearinghouse on Child Abuse and Neglect Information and the National Adoption Information Clearinghouse are services of the Children's Bureau, Administration for Children and Families, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The mission of the Clearinghouses is to connect professionals and concerned citizens to timely and well-balanced information on programs, research, legislation, and statistics regarding the safety, permanency, and well-being of children and families.
The National Clearinghouse on Child Abuse and Neglect Information (NCCANCH) was established in 1974 by the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act to collect, organize, and disseminate information on all aspects of child maltreatment. The legislation that established a national clearinghouse for information relating to child abuse is available online.
The National Adoption Information Clearinghouse (NAIC) was established by Congress in 1987 to provide free information on all aspects of adoption. The NAIC website provides comprehensive information on domestic and intercountry adoption. The legislation that established the National Adoption Information Clearinghouse is available online.

What We Offer
Websites. The Clearinghouses manage the following websites. Together they receive in excess of 2.5 million visits a year.
Personalized customer responses. Our staff responds to more than 14,000 telephone and e-mail inquires each year.
Print and electronic documents. Almost 140,000 print products and approximately 988,000 electronic products, created by the Administration for Children and Families, their grantees, and the Clearinghouses, are distributed each year.
New publications. Every year, the Clearinghouses create and update numerous fact sheets, bulletins, organization resource lists, State laws summaries, syntheses of recent research, and other publications.
Online databases. The Clearinghouses maintain searchable databases including:
- Clearinghouse Library Search for abstracts of resources related to child abuse and neglect, child welfare, and adoption, including bibliographies, abstracts of journal articles, documents and research reports, books, dissertations, and videotapes
- Related Organizations/Resource Lists for organizations dealing with child welfare and adoption issues
- National Adoption Directory for State licensed adoption agencies, support groups, and more
- State Statute Search for summaries of laws pertaining to child abuse and neglect, child welfare, and adoption
- Conference Calendar Search for relevant conferences and events
- Workforce Development/Training Resources for training organizations, university degree programs, and workforce development/training publications
Electronic online digest. The monthly Children's Bureau Express provides news and resources to help professionals in the field of child welfare do their jobs more effectively.
Electronic product alert. E-lert!, a free subscription to a monthly e-mail service, alerts subscribers to new publications and resources distributed by the Clearinghouses.

Find Help with a Personal Situation
As services of the Children's Bureau in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Clearinghouses do not have the authority to intervene in or advise on personal situations. The Clearinghouses are not equipped to accept reports of suspected child abuse or neglect, or to offer crisis counseling. Please call Childhelp USA® at 1-800-4-A-Child® if you are concerned that a child is being harmed.
