This
Conference will create the opportunity for various native and
non-native people to come together to become better informed and
collaborate about implementing actions with tribes and tribal
communities to increase the number of native public health
professionals.
The first day will include several
presentations on the health disparities and health needs of AI/AN/NH
people, and the need to build a culturally competent public health
workforce. We will have an opportunity to hear directly from native
leaders, the Department of Health and Human Services, and current
recruitment, retention and future strategies being done by academic
institutions.
Beginning on day one and continuing
through day two, each participant will be assigned to a group that
will be charged with discussing, identifying, and developing
solutions and actions that CDC/ATSDR and it's partners can and will
take to support the ability of native students to pursue careers in
public health. This process will culminate in the attendees having
clearly identified some next steps for tribes, tribal organizations,
academic institutions, and Federal agencies to take in addressing
the need for an increased native public health workforce in which we
can all be held accountable.
It is
intended that this conference will be an annual event that will
continue to guide and focus collective efforts throughout Federal
agencies and academia to work effectively with tribes to build
public health capacity. |
