CDC’s National Immunization Program, the Public Health Training Network, the Division of Professional Development and Evaluation, and Public Health Practice Program Office presented  “Adult Immunization Update: A National Immunization Program and Public Health Training Network Satellite Broadcast & Webcast.” The event took place on June 26, 2003 and was viewed at various CDC/ATSDR locations.

The program’s goal was to improve immunization practices in the United States, and featured the “Recommended Adult Immunization Schedule United States, 2002-2003.” It identified the following objectives:

red triangle Summarize the morbidity and mortality of vaccine-preventable diseases in adults in the United States.
red triangle Describe vaccines routinely recommended for adults.
red triangle List two strategies to increase adult immunization coverage levels.

William Atkinson, MD, MPH, and Donna Weaver, MN, RN, both from CDC’s National Immunization Program, discussed the most recent recommendations for immunizing adults against a variety of infections, including influenza, pneumonia, and hepatitis A and B. They also profiled programs that work to increase compliance with these recommendations within communities especially at risk for these infections.
