Dr. Camara Jones, CDC’s Research Director on Social Determinants of Health, presented “Confronting Institutional Racism” as the 5th annual William T. Small, Jr. Keynote Lecture to the 25th annual UNC School of Public Health Minority Health Conference on February 28, 2003.

Dr. Jones discussed the impacts of different types of racism on the health and well-being of American society. She emphasized that definitions of race are arbitrary and that racism undermines the potential of society as a whole. She called on the nation to examine the mechanisms of racism and to continue to keep race and racism on the national agenda for action.
