Tribal Traditional Methods of Healing. July 17th, 2003

ATSDR Office of Tribal Affairs Presents:

Dr. Ben Muneta, Senior Chronic Disease Epidemiologist
Indian Health Service

Thursday, July 17, 2003

The Office of Tribal Affairs at ATSDR sponsored “Tribal Traditional Methods of Healing” by Dr. Ben Muneta, a Senior Chronic Disease Epidemiologist with the Indian Health Service. The event took place on Thursday, July 17, 2003, at CDC's Roybal Campus in Atlanta.

Tratitional Healing methods are used throughout the world today. In fact traditional medicine is probably the predominant form of health care for many Third World Nations. Contrary to western medical thinking, traditional medicine exists because to a large degree it works quite well.  Dr. Muneta elaborated on the use of herbal medicines, faith healing, and sound public health practices by indigenous healers. He also highlighted the use of traditional medicine in the context of how it impacts public health efforts in various countries, traditional medicine use among Native Americans in the United States, and the Hantavirus outbreak of 1993 at the Navajo Nation.

Dr. Ben Muneta is an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation. He graduated from UC Berkeley 1976, Stanford Medical School in 1980, Clinical Director of Native American Clinic, San Francisco 1983-85, Chief Medical Officer Navajo Tribe 1985-88, EIS & PMR Program (Division of Diabetes) 1989-92, IHS Chronic Disease Epidemiologist 1993-2003,  AAIP President 2002-03. Currently Dr. Muneta is President of the Association of American Indian Physicians.
