Conference Highlights Converging Technologies
Experts from industry, academia and government showcase methods for integrating knowledge to improve human performance
As nanotechnology, biotechnology, information technology, and cognitive science progress, researchers are finding new ways to integrate their findings. This convergence will bring new approaches to what are now diverse areas of research - physical and mental performance, human-machine interface, communications, learning, work efficiency, and many others. Already, some researchers have adopted a more coherent educational approach based on perspective gained from the nanoscale.
The impact on quality of life may be dramatic, with research ultimately affecting medicine, manufacture, and even how we think and learn. NSF and the Department of Commerce prepared the first report on converging technologies for improving human performance in 2002 (http://www.nsf.gov/nano), and its outcome is already reflected in several NSF projects.
Co-chaired by Mihail Roco, Senior Advisor at NSF and Chair of the National Science and Technology Council's Subcommittee on Nanoscale Science, Engineering and Technology, and Carlo Montemagno, Chair of the Department of Bioengineering at UCLA and Co-Director of the Institute for Cell Mimetic Space Exploration, the conference will feature panels and lectures from research and education leaders, including presentations on convergence products and manufacturing processes already in development.
