NSF Director to Present 2003 Director's AwardsNational Science Foundation Director Rita R. Colwell will present the 3rd Annual Director's Awards for Distinguished Teaching Scholars to six awardees at 6 p.m. June 3 at the National Academy of Sciences. Each award carries with it a $300,000 grant for the development of innovative ways to incorporate laboratory research into mathematics, science, technology and engineering instruction geared toward all undergraduate students regardless of major.
NSF is an independent federal agency that supports fundamental research and education across all fields of science and engineering, with an annual budget of nearly $5 billion. NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to nearly 2,000 universities and institutions. Each year, NSF receives about 30,000 competitive requests for funding, and makes about 10,000 new funding awards. NSF also awards over $200 million in professional and service contracts yearly.
