NSF PA/M 03-36 (NSB 03-103) - August 8, 2003

Diversity Workshop Opens National Science Board Meeting (Aug. 12-14)

A workshop on critical national issues affecting the diversity of students and faculty in the nation's colleges and universities will kick off a National Science Board (NSB) meeting Aug. 12-14, 2003 at the National Science Foundation’s headquarters, 4201 Wilson Blvd., Arlington, Va.

The recent Supreme Court decision on the use of race in admissions at the University of Michigan, changing demographics on campuses and heightened concerns about homeland security have altered the context and urgency for recruiting and retaining women and underrepresented minorities in science and engineering studies, professional practice and academic careers.

The daylong workshop on Aug. 12, "Broadening Participation in Science and Engineering Research and Education," will include discussions of successful models for broadening participation, shrinking diversity gaps between students and faculty, and proposals for policy development. A group of distinguished panelists and NSB members will lead the series of discussions and breakout sessions. The meeting is open to researchers, educators, administrators, the media and the general public.

On Aug. 13-14, the NSB will conduct its regular meeting related to the activities of the National Science Foundation (NSF). The NSB will consider adopting a final report on National Workforce Policies for Science and Engineering, and the NSF Strategic Plan for 2003-2008.

Public sessions and various NSB committees and task forces are scheduled for rooms 1235 and 1295 at NSF headquarters. (Visitors should check in at security desk, 9th & Stuart Streets entrance – for directions, see:
http://www.nsf.gov/home/visit/visitjump.htm). Reporters are invited to attend all open sessions, subject to provisions of the Government in the Sunshine Act. A final NSB meeting agenda is available at:
