NSF and Japan’s Science Minister
Issue Joint Statement
Mr. Hirofumi Nakasone, Minister of Education, Science, Sports and Culture,
and Minister of State for Science and Technology, and Dr. Rita Colwell,
Director of the National Science Foundation, met on Monday, May 1 at NSF
in Arlington, Virginia to discuss collaborative relationships between
Japan and NSF. They issued a joint statement highlighting ongoing activities
and new areas to be explored.

Among the cooperative endeavors discussed by Colwell and Nakasone are:
- Studies of the earth through an ongoing deep ocean drilling program
- New earth system simulations through expanded computing resources
- New studies of microbiology in the deep ocean
- New research into natural disasters and into mitigating their effects
- Student and researcher exchanges to promote international collaboration
