NSF Hosts First Public Hearing of the Commission on Women, Minorities
The National Science Foundation [NSF] will host the first open public hearing
of the Congressionally-mandated Commission on the Advancement of Women and Minorities
in Science, Engineering and Technology Development on Tuesday, July 20, from
8:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.
The commission was established under Public Law 105-255 in response
to a 1996 NSF report on women, minorities, and persons with disabilities
in science and engineering. This is the first of two public hearings scheduled
for the purpose of receiving public comment from industry, academia, government,
associations and other interested parties on how to best recruit, retain
and advance women, minorities and persons with disabilities within all
fields of science, engineering and technology in the public and private
sectors. The testimony will be incorporated into a report to the President,
Congress and key state leaders.
The meeting will open with remarks by NSF Director Rita Colwell. Key
guest speakers will include Martha A. Krebs, Director, Office of Science
at the Department of Energy and Kenneth Disken, a vice president for human
resources at Lockheed Martin Corporation.
