Italian Medical and Scientific Society of Maryland to Honor NSF Director Rita Colwell

The Italian Medical and Scientific Society of Maryland will present its first ever Lifetime Achievement Award in Science to National Science Foundation (NSF) director Rita R. Colwell on Thursday, Sept. 9 at the Hayfields Country Club in Hunt Valley, Maryland. The society is an educational, social and philanthropic organization dedicated to communicating the importance of medical and life sciences and for furthering improved health care nationwide.

Former Maryland governor Donald Schaefer will present the award to the NSF director at a dinner and ceremony starting at 6 p.m.

The award consists of a plaque engraved with a citation recognizing Colwell's "outstanding contributions and meritorious services to the advancement of the life sciences."

Colwell will also address the audience on "Medicine and Science: A Prescription for Success."

Other featured speakers include Robert Gallo, M.D., director of the Human Virology Institute, University of Maryland, and Danielle Rigamonti, M.D., professor of neurosurgery, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
