NSF Tokyo Office S&T Advisor to Receive NSF Distinguished Public
Service Award
The National Science Foundation (NSF) will honor a 41-year veteran of
federal service with the agency's Distinguished Public Service Award for
lifetime achievement. Masanobu Miyahara, a senior scientific affairs advisor
for NSF's Tokyo Office, will be honored in a ceremony at NSF headquarters
on Dec. 15.
In nearly 37 years with NSF (all in its Tokyo office), Miyahara progressed
from translator to scientific affairs specialist and key advisor to the
director of the Tokyo office. He helped to develop and negotiate some
of NSF's most important efforts in U.S./Japan relations in science and
technology. Miyahara was instrumental in implementing the U.S.-Japan Cooperative
Science Program, various Japanese fellowship programs and summer graduate
students programs.
The last Distinguished Public Service Award by NSF was given posthumously
to Carl Sagan in 1997. Miyahara's award will be the seventh given by NSF
in this decade.
