Common Symptoms of STIs/RTIs

A Guide to Common Symptoms
This table lists some of the most common symptoms of RTIs, together with possible causes. You can find additional information by clicking on any of the RTIs listed below. There are other infections or conditions that may be responsible for the symptoms listed, so if you are experiencing some of these symptoms it does not necessarily mean that you have a reproductive tract infection (RTI).

It is important to remember that many women and men who have an RTI, especially one that is transmitted by sexual contact, often do not experience any symptoms at all.

RTIs may lead to serious complications--especially in women--if they are left untreated. In addition, RTIs increase the risk of acquiring or transmitting HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms listed below or believe you have an RTI, you should talk to a health care worker as soon as possible.
