NLM Reading Rooms and Services:
Conduct Policies

Library users must comply with the following guidelines in order to use the Library: The public reading rooms shall be used only for quiet scholarly research or educational purpose requiring use of Library materials. All persons using these areas shall comply with any special rules for the use of Library materials and facilities, shall avoid disturbing other readers, and shall REFRAIN from:

Intentionally damaging any item from the collections of the National Library of Medicine.

Intentionally damaging any item of Library equipment or property.

Making disruptive noise.

Using any musical instrument or device, loudspeaker, sound amplifier, or other similar machine or device for the production or reproduction of sound at volumes that can be heard by other patrons.

Using cellular telephones in the Reading Room; these may be used in the Lobby.

Eating, drinking or bringing food or drink containers into the Reading Room.

Using furniture or furnishings inappropriately.

Using Library photocopy machines, computer terminals, and other equipment for purposes other than obtaining biomedical information.

Using the Library's photocopy equipment for long periods while others are waiting to use them. Please observe posted time limits.

Blocking doorways, aisles, or walkways.
