As part of this year's "Work Safe This Summer" campaign, the Department
of Labor today calls on artists from across the land to create and submit
entries for a poster for its Teen Safety Home Page. Both the campaign and the
poster web page are designed to increase awareness among teens, parents and
employers on teen working rights when students begin seeking summer work. 3.5
million teens will work this summer; 200,000 will be injured, and 64,000 will
require emergency room treatment. Roughly 70 teens die every year in
work-related accidents.
The winning artist will be announced in Washington and awarded for the
work. While the organizers of the campaign expect much of the artwork to be
submitted by teens, the contest is open to anyone interested.
"The purpose of the campaign is to promote safe workplaces as essential
to a positive work experience," said Cynthia Metzler, Acting Secretary of the
Department of Labor. "Today, we invite others to help us get the message out
early!"
