OPA Press Release: Statement by Secretary of Labor Alexis M. Herman on the El Monte Settlement [10/24/1997]

"Like millions of other Americans, I felt shock and horror at the plight of the immigrant workers who were held in virtual slavery in barricaded sweatshops in El Monte, Calif. This incident brought to light the continuing existence of sweatshops and forced labor in this country -- conditions most Americans assumed were relics of a bygone era. The $2 million settlement these workers have won, in addition to the criminal convictions in this case, shows that our system can ensure workers a fair measure of justice. We must continue to remember the horror of El Monte, as we work to prevent such crimes in the future."
