OFFERS NEW EXPERIMENTAL IONOSPHERIC PRODUCTS
The NOAA Space Environment Center and National Geodetic Survey
release a new experimental ionosphere products to help emergency
managers and other users quickly assess the effects of solar
storms on Global Positioning System applications. The SEC
has created a near real-time ionospheric specification map
of total electron content, or TEC, over the continental United
States that updates every 15 minutes. The USTEC map will aid
users affected by ionospheric conditions—GPS applications,
surveyors, emergency managers, and others—to quickly
assess the current situation that may impact their systems.
The ionosphere is the area of the Earth's atmosphere beginning
at an altitude of about 30 miles and extending upwards to
10,000 miles.

NOAA
U.S. WINTER OUTLOOK UPDATE — NOAA updated
its U.S. Winter Outlook for December 2004 through February 2005,
which continues to call for warmer-than-normal conditions in
the West and Alaska, and cooler-than-normal conditions in the
South and in sections of the mid-Atlantic coast states. For
precipitation, NOAA's Outlook calls for drier-than-average conditions
in the Pacific Northwest and Ohio Valley and wetter-than-average
conditions over parts of the South. |

SURVEY OF NORTHWESTERN HAWAIIAN ISLANDS —
The newly commissioned NOAA research vessel Hi'ialakai completed
its first mission with a successful, comprehensive, five-week
survey of marine ecosystems in the waters of the remote Northwestern
Hawaiian Islands Coral Reef Ecosystem Reserve. During the 35-day
cruise, 18 researchers conducted assessments, monitoring and
mapping operations throughout the waters and reefs within the
reserve. |
