Foreword

This report presents 1997 earnings and employment data by state and county for persons covered under the Social Security (146.7 million) and Medicare (149.8 million) programs. Beginning with this issue, the data are shown separately for each program.

The data show by selected characteristics (sex, age, and race), the number of wage and salary workers and self-employed persons, the amount of their taxable earnings, and the amount they paid in Social Security and Medicare contributions. The information in this publication is a rich data source for researchers and policymakers who are interested in studying the primary revenue source for the Social Security (Old-Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance) program and the Medicare (Hospital Insurance Part A) program. When coupled with the Social Security Administration publication OASDI Beneficiaries by State and County, these data are valuable for studying the impact that the Social Security program has on a state or county, and are used for this purpose in academia, private industry, and state governments.

Greg Diez, Bill Kearns, Wayne Long, Shirley Piazza, Bev Smith, and Cres Smith in the Division of Earnings Statistics and Analysis prepared this publication. This and other publications on the Social Security program are available on our Web site at www.ssa.gov/policy.
