Question: Why do LocatorPlus records for Chinese materials reflect a mixture of Wade-Giles and pinyin romanization?

Answer:

- NLM is making a transition from the use of Wade-Giles to pinyin romanization of Chinese bibliographic information and authority headings appearing in NLM LocatorPlus
- For example, the romanized form of the Chinese word for "Peking" is changing from "Pei-ching" (Wade-Giles) to "Beijing" (pinyin)
- This conversion project, which is being carried out in conjunction with libraries throughout the United States, is scheduled to conclude by the end of 2001
