FAQ
Use of Publication Types by Catalogers
Question: How can I determine which Publication Types in the Medical Subject Headings Annotated Alphabetic List are used by catalogers?
Answer:
-
- The Medical Subject Headings Annotated Alphabetic List (Annotated MeSH) includes several different lists which categorize usage of Publication Types - Genre Terms.
- - Catalogers use those terms in the list headed "Generally Used for Cataloging."
- - Catalogers use only those terms in the list headed "Generally Used for Current Article Indexing" that are repeated in the list headed "Generally Used for Cataloging".
- - The "Publication Types - Scope Notes" section of the Medical Subject Headings Annotated Alphabetic List is an alphabetic list of all Publication Types included in MeSH, with the exception of those new in the current year. It provides definitions of each term but does not identify whether a particular term is used for cataloging or indexing.
-
- Other instructions limiting usage are provided as annotations within the text of the Medical Subject Headings Annotated Alphabetic List.
