Digital Audio-Visual Preservation Prototyping Project

The Library of Congress audio-visual prototyping project is exploring aspects of digital preservation for audio and video during 1999-2004. The project is developing approaches for reformatting recorded sound and moving image collections, and studying issues related to "born-digital" audio-visual content. One key emphasis is the packaging or "wrapping" of digital content, with a focus on metadata. The project is an activity of the Motion Picture, Broadcasting, and Recorded Sound Division, joined by the American Folklife Center and other Library units. The prototyping effort is contributing to the planning for the new National Audio-Visual Conservation Center in Culpeper, Virginia, scheduled to open in 2005. The activity is coordinating its work with Library of Congress planning efforts concerned with the digital content life cycle and the design of repository systems to store, maintain, and deliver digital content.
