Getting in Step with Phase II: A Workshop for Stormwater Program Managers

Overview

Based on the highly popular Getting in Step outreach workshop series, this workshop will not disappoint you. The objective of the workshop is to provide state and local stormwater program managers with innovative tools and real-world examples that can be used to address the six minimum control measures called for by the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Permit Program Phase II requirements. The workshop includes lively group exercises and many opportunities for discussion.

Eight workshops are currently scheduled. Each workshop will highlight the particular stormwater issues faced by states in that area. You are welcome to attend any workshop.

Intended Audience: The workshop is open to state, regional, and local officials and program managers responsible for developing Stormwater Phase II Programs. Registration priority will be given to state and local stormwater program managers.

Dates and Locations - Provides a listing of scheduled dates for this training course.

Number of Participants (Course Size): Approx. 50-100

Cost: Free. However, the New Orleans workshop is part of a larger conference and requires a $100 registration fee. Please check the individual workshop descriptions for any additional fees.

Time: 2 days

Course Sponsor: EPA's Office of Wastewater Management, EPA's Office of Wetlands, Oceans, and Watersheds, with assistance from many of the states in each region.

Sample Agenda:
Day 1: Learn how to develop and conduct an effective public outreach and involvement program. You'll learn the six basic outreach steps, how to work with the media, how to develop effective materials, and how to promote behavior change in your community. Course instructors have conducted more than 80 workshops across the country, and they know what works!

Day 2: Covers some of the following:

  • Illicit Discharge Detection and Elimination (IDDE)
    • Program requirements
    • Survey of Phase I programs
    • What it takes to develop an IDDE program
    • Field and lab assessment networks
  • Construction Site Runoff Control
    • Program requirements
    • Stormwater pollution prevention plans
    • BMPs for controlling construction site runoff
    • Program start-up
    • Training inspectors
  • Post Construction Runoff Control
    • Program requirements
    • Sample new development requirements
    • BMP maintenance and inspection
    • Success stories
  • Pollution Prevention/Good Housekeeping
    • Program requirements
    • Urban infrastructure
    • Housekeeping practices
    • Training and educating municipal staff
