The
225th initiative began in June 1998 as an effort of Revolutionary
War-related parks in the Park Service's Northeast and Southeast
regions (NER and SER) to bring Servicewide coordination and consistency
to the management and interpretation of the War. A set of goals
was developed by a planning group involving some 17 parks, support
office staff from NER and SER, and Washington Office (WASO) program
managers. Currently the initiative has grown to include parks and
programs in the Midwest (MWR) and National Capital (NCR) regions.
The intent of the initiative is to use the
225th anniversary of the American Revolution, running from 2000
to 2008, to enhance public understanding of the various meanings
and enduring legacy of the Revolution. Working with public and private
partners, we will share the varied stories of the Revolution with
the broadest possible audience. We will encourage reflection and
debate on the continuing global impact of the Revolution, and foster
the preservation and restoration of the physical resources that
are our most tangible links to the world-changing events of the
late 18th century. At the conclusion of the 225th activities, we
expect the multiple meanings of the American Revolution to be lodged
securely in the public's imagination and the historic resources
from the period to be better protected than ever before.

5. Ensure a lasting legacy of public awareness and resource preservation.
