Alexander Hamilton: The Man Who Made Modern
America
As part of the New-York Historical Society's master menu of
special events commemorating its 2004 bicentennial, it will
mount Alexander
Hamilton: The Man Who Made Modern America, a multi-layered
exploration of the life and influence of Alexander Hamilton
(1757-1804), one of the nation's Founding Fathers and New York's
most versatile immigrant luminaries: aide-de-camp to General
George Washington, author of the majority of the Federalist
Papers, first Secretary of the Treasury, creator of the Bank
of the United States, founder of the Bank of New York and of
the New York Post. Under the direction of Professor James Basker,
Project Director, and co-curated by Richard Brookhiser, author
of Alexander Hamilton: American and Mina Rieur Weiner, the exhibition
will use paintings, prints, drawings, sculpture, decorative
arts, manuscripts, printed books, memorabilia and audiovisual
materials from The New-York Historical Society, the Gilder Lehrman
Collection, the Museum of the City of New York, and other distinguished
institutions and archives. The exhibition will trace the complex
curve of Hamilton's life, from his illegitimate birth on the
island of Nevis to his dramatic and untimely death in 1804,
resulting from injuries suffered in a duel with Vice President
Aaron Burr. Contact the New-York
Hostorical Society for details.
