Research Project: Discovery & Development of Biological Control Agents for Melaleuca, Lygodium & Other Weeds

Location:

Project Number: 210-22000-003-00
Project Type: Appropriated

Start Date: Feb 13, 2002
End Date: Aug 31, 2005

Objective:
Biological control of exotic weeds from Australia and Southeast Asia with with emphasis on controlling Melaleuca and Lygodium in the Florida Everglades. Conduct foreign exploration in native habitats of weeds in Australia and Southeast Asia. Locate, evaluate, and ship host-specific arthropod natural enemies to U.S. cooperators for biological control of targeted weed species.

Approach:
Field surveys are conducted throughout the native range of weed species in Australia and Southeast Asia for effective biological control agents. Potential control agents are identified, screened for pathogens and parasitoids, and evaluated for efficacy and host-specificity in collaboration with Australian and U.S. cooperators. Project number formerly 4001-22000-003 in mode code 4001-00.
