Transportation Expressions 1996

This report presents transportation expressions and definitions used throughout the Federal government, private organizations, Canada and Mexico. This report provides users of transportation information with a comprehensive inventory of transportation expressions and their referents. The Source Index lists the sources used to compile this report.

You may search by Expression, Definition or Alphabetically. You can perform only one search at a time. Entering information into both search fields does not narrow search results. If you have trouble, visit Help.

Search Information

A record is composed of an expression, definition and sources.
For example, 'Pedestrian' is the expression, 'Any person not in or upon a
motor vehicle or other vehicle' is the definition and '(NHTSA3) (NSC1)'
are the sources.

  • None of the searches are case sensitive. Searching for PEDESTRIAN will produce the same results as searching for pedestrian.
  • The Expression field searches for the word or phrase as it is entered and will return all records that match or contain that word or phrase. Searching for pedestrian will return records for pedestrian, and pedestrian walkway.
  • The Definition field searches for the word or phrase as it is entered and will return all records that whose definition contains that word or phrase.
  • Expression: This represents the expressions contained in the source material. You would use this search when you know all or part of an expression and seek the full expression and its definition. For example: To view the exact definition for pedestrian, type pedestrian in the Expression search box. You will receive the full record for that query and any others that contain the word pedestrian in their expression.
  • Definition: This represents the definitions contained in the data. You would use this search when you know all or part of the definition and seek the full definition and its expression. For example: To view expressions related to the term pedestrian, type pedestrian in the Definition search box. You will receive the full record for that query and any others that contain the word "Pedestrian" in their definitions. You do not have to know an entire definition to obtain its expression. You may search for a keyword or phrase.
  • Alphabetical Listing: This function works differently than the Expression and Definition searches. To view a list of records whose expressions begin with the same letter, click that letter on the alphabet list. For example: To view all expressions beginning with the letter B, click B on the alphabet list. You will receive full records for all expressions that begin with the letter B.
