Healthy People 2010

Healthy People 2010 logoHealthy People 2010 is the federal government's prevention agenda for building a healthier nation. It is a statement of national health objectives designed to identify the most significant preventable threats to health and to establish national goals to reduce these threats. It is designed to achieve two major overarching goals—to increase the quality and years of Americans' healthy life and to eliminate disparities in the burden of disease. The plan contains 467 objectives that are organized into 28 focus areas. There are 16 objectives regarding heart disease and stroke specifically, and more in related areas that are relevant to heart disease and stroke.

See the Healthy People 2010: Focus Area 12 — Heart Disease and Stroke objectives.

CDC and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute are working together on the nation's Healthy People 2010 objectives to combat heart disease and stroke. In doing so, they signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the American Heart Association and the following federal agencies to speed progress toward meeting the goals set forth in Healthy People 2010

  • National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)
  • National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health (NIH)
  • National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke of the NIH
  • Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services
  • Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, Office of Public Health and Science
  • Office of the Surgeon General, Office of Public Health and Science (Department of Health and Human Services)

The Memorandum of Understanding establishes four areas of mutual interest for achieving the Healthy People 2010 objectives:

  • Prevent the development of risk factors for heart disease and stroke
  • Detect and treat risk factors for heart disease and stroke
  • Achieve early identification and treatment of cardiovascular disease and stroke, especially in their acute phases
  • Prevent the recurrence and complications of heart disease and stroke

CDC is also working with other partners to achieve the Healthy People goals.

Please see the Healthy People 2010 heart and stroke partners Web site for more information on partner activities related to reducing the burden of heart disease and stroke in the United States.
