Can I use a metal detector, collect fossils, or go rockhounding
on Federal lands?
Using metal detectors and collecting fossils or rocks (rockhounding) is prohibited in many recreation sites, especially National Parks and Civil War battlefields. Laws vary among sites managed by different federal, state, and local agencies as well.
