The data is provided at no cost in order to encourage wide distribution and regular updates to different publications, databases, and websites, so customers can receive correct information from many different systems.

Recreation.gov is an electronic government ("e-gov") initiative that demonstrates the advantages of using a data standard based on an XML Schema and data exchange via Web services. Eliminating costs wherever possible and simplifying the data exchange process will facilitate dissemination of consistent, reliable information.

Recreation.gov provides a "retail outlet" to view the information in the database, but the website is not intended to be the only place to view the data in the system.

Recreation One-Stop is a data sharing initiative, designed so customers will be able to find recreation information easily through the Recreation.gov website or through other channels. When a large number of websites are displaying data that is as up-to-date as the information in Recreation.gov, then the objectives of the data sharing initiative have been achieved.
