February 2003

In honor of Black History Month, February 2003, CDC/ATSDR and Blacks in Government (BIG) presented A Celebration of Black HistoryThe Souls of Black Folk: Centennial Reflections” on Monday, February 10, 2003, at CDC’s Roybal Campus in Atlanta, Georgia.

Dr. Ed Thompson, CDC/ATSDR Deputy Director gave the opening remarks and introduced the keynote speaker, the Honorable Marcia Woods Glenn, Mayor, City of Lithonia, Georgia.

Mayor Glenn spoke eloquently on the history of Black History Month and its importance to modern day African-American communities. She inspired the audience to draw strength from their own history to achieve their own dreams.

CDC employee and Minister Rev. Rose Glass, Vocalist, sister of Mayor Glenn, gave a stunning performance on 3 song selections. She invited the audience to participate in "I Believe I Can Fly."

Ms. Shirley Holmes, President, CDC/ATSDR Chapter Blacks in Government delivered an award of appreciation to Mayor Glenn.
