HISPANIC/LATINO HERITAGE MONTH ~ Hispanic Americans: Making a
Difference in Our Communities and our Nation |

Hispanics or Latinos are persons of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican,
South- or Central-American, or other Spanish culture or origin,
regardless of race. The federal government considers race and
Hispanic origin to be two separate and distinct concepts; Hispanic/Latino
Americans may be any race. According to the 2000 U.S. Census,
Hispanics/Latinos of all races represent 12.5 percent of the U.S.
population, about 35 million individuals. The Census Bureau projects
that by the year 2035 there will be 75 million Hispanic/Latino individuals,
comprising 20 percent of the population. Though Hispanic/Latino communities
can be found throughout Florida, the Northeast, and other parts of
the country, the greatest concentrations of Hispanics/Latinos are in the
southwestern states from Texas to California. The states with the
greatest concentration of Hispanics/Latinos are New Mexico, California,
Texas, Arizona, Nevada, Colorado, and Florida. |

Observing Hispanic/Latino heritage was first approved as a week observance by
a Joint Resolution of the United States Congress on September 17,
1968. Twenty years later, on August 17, 1988, President Ronald
Reagan expanded the celebrations to a month, September 15 to October
15. The time period was selected to coincide with the independence
celebrations of Mexico, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala,
Honduras, Chile and Nicaragua. |
