CDC’s National Native American, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Coalition celebrated National American Indian Heritage Month by hosting “Honor: Honoring Life, Honoring Elders, Honoring Heritage.”  The event took place on Friday, Nov. 22, at CDC’s Roybal Campus in Atlanta, Georgia.

The event featured cultural performances and presentations including Tom Blue Wolf, Executive Director of Earthkeepers (Muskogee tribe); Brenda Robinson, Leader of the Gila River tribe; Charles Grimm, Interim Director of the Indian Health Service (Cherokee tribe), and the Kau-ta-noh Jrs (drum group, various tribes).  Dr. Julie Gerberding, Director of CDC, gave a moving talk about her personal experiences with American Indian communities in her youth.  The drum group surprised Craig Wilkins, Co-Chair of AI/AN/NH Coalition (Lumbee tribe) by honoring him as a role model for young American Indians and Alaska Natives.

Speakers:
Julie L. Gerberding, MD, MPH, Director, CDC
Henry Falk, MD, MPH, Assistant Administrator, ATSDR
Craig Wilkins, MPH, Co-Chair of AI/AN/NH Coalition, Lumbee
Dean S. Seneca, MPH, MCURP, Office of Tribal Affairs, ATSDR, Seneca
Alan Crawford, MPH, Office of Tribal Affairs, ATSDR, Blackfeet

Sponsors:  CDC Foundation, National Center for Environmental Health, Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, National Center for HIV, STD, and TB Prevention, Office of Equal Employment Opportunity, SHARE
