HSHPS/CDC Medical & Public Health
 Student Internship Program Description

The HSHPS/CDC internship program will provide the opportunity for medical students to work at either the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, GA, or in a clinic affiliated with one of the medical schools on the U.S.-Mexico Border (Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, or California.)

Eligibility: 
Students in medical or public health school, in good standing, interested in disease prevention and/or border health issues.  Students should have an interest in gaining knowledge about careers in the Federal government, obtaining skills related to the prevention research, surveillance, public health policy, and program development.

Description:
The Internship is planned for a period of eight weeks, during which the students will participate in the following activities:

  Two-Day Orientation Meeting—HSHPS and CDC representatives will present an overview of the program, history of HSHPS, overview of CDC and the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services mission and structure.  The students will be provided a tour of the CDC and become acquainted with resources and services for the program.
  Weekly Seminars at CDC—The project officer and project director at the beginning of the program or by the mentor will select the seminars. Weekly meetings with the mentor will be scheduled.
  Research Project—The students will participate in at least one research project during the program that will provide knowledge and skills development in a prevention research area at the CDC.  The Students will be expected to be actively involved in related discussions, to read background materials and to write a journal that could be used in a paper on the research project.
  Meetings—The students will participate in policy and program development meetings, staff meetings, as well as in agency-wide meetings on major Federal initiatives related to Hispanic health.
  Medical School Participation—The HSHPS Project Director will work with the HSHPS institutions of the selected students to obtain academic credit for the eight-week elective rotation and to resolve issues such as financial aid or evaluation forms.

Pay:
Travel expenses, room and board, and stipend.

Duration:
The Internship is planned for a period of eight weeks. Dates for the 2004 summer session will be established.
