HHS Emerging Leaders Program

"An opportunity for personal growth and development"

image of people from the hhs elpIf you are a dynamic, driven and achievement-oriented individual, get ready for an opportunity of a lifetime! We are seeking individuals for the 2004 Emerging Leaders class. This fantastic opportunity will include exposure to a number of Federal Programs that HHS oversees, and an opportunity to work on issues that are on the fore front of our nations needs. In this program, you will build a strong foundation of leadership,technical and strategic skills as well as participate in the development of internal strategies and planning for the organization—skills that are necessary to building and carrying out a national agenda.

This challenging 24-month program provides training in departmental core competencies, multiple job rotations to gain familiarity with people and programs across HHS, assignment of mentors to provide career development advice and support, and training in specific technical competencies based on your chosen career path.

There are five career paths from which to choose: scientific, public health, information technology, social science and administrative.

The Emerging Leaders Program will allow you to explore diverse career fields, involving your educational background, within the Department of Health Human Services, while providing you with the skills and experience needed for a career with the Federal Government. During the program you will have unique professional opportunities, including close interaction with the various agency executives of the Department of Health and Human Services, as well as with public, private, non-profit, and advocacy organizations. Through programs designed specifically for the Emerging Leaders Program curriculum, you will meet and learn from notable government directors and researchers, career coaches, and policy experts. You will have numerous opportunities, which are unique in nature and offered only to participants of this program.

Positions are being filled at the GS-9 level and carry promotion potential to the GS-12.

Emerging Leaders Program

During the first year of the program, you will have the chance to experience opportunities within many of the Operating Divisions of HHS, by doing 60-90 days rotational assignments. You will also be given multiple rotational assignments, an intensive orientation, as well as an assigned mentor to provide career advice, support, and training in HHS core competencies and values.

The second year of the program is devoted to technical development in your chosen career path. You will return to your operating division to work in your position. Use this program as a passport to a unique and rewarding career experience with assignments as biologists, chemists, consumer safety officers, public health analysts and advisors, health insurance analysts, social science careers, social science analysts, economists, statisticians, social workers, human resources, budget analysts, contract and grant specialist, information technology specialists, computer programmers, computer engineers, and many more.

Applicants' will select one of the following career paths: (1) Scientific, (2) Public Health, (3) Social Sciences, (4) Information Technology and (5) Administrative.
