WASHINGTON, Jan. 15, 2004
- Agriculture Secretary Ann M. Veneman today announced plans to purchase
up to $50 million of canned and frozen orange juice for donation to child
nutrition and other domestic food assistance programs.
"This purchase will provide recipients of our federal food programs
with a nutritious product," said Veneman.
USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service purchases a variety of high quality
food products every year for distribution by USDA's Food and Nutrition Service
to the National School Lunch Program, the School Breakfast Program, the
Summer Food Service Program, the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations,
the Nutrition Program for the Elderly, the Commodity Supplemental Food Program
and the Emergency Food Assistance Program. USDA also makes emergency purchases
of commodities for distribution to victims of natural disasters.
In the current fiscal year which began Oct. 1, 2003, USDA has already purchased
$4.3 million of canned and frozen orange juice. Last year USDA purchased
$13.1 million of canned and frozen orange juice. In fiscal year 2002, USDA
purchased $8.6 million; and in 2001, $14.8 million.
The purchase offer will be open to those processing 100% domestic orange
juice.
