or other kinds of controlled information are not put up on the internet?
Question #1:
Are all reports held by the Library in the online
Library Catalog?
No, only about a third of the 1.5 million unclassified
reports held by the Research Library appear in the library
catalog.
We are gradually creating catalog records for all our reports. Classified and
unclassified controlled reports are not included in the library catalog.
If you do not find the report you want in the library catalog
please check with Library staff to determine availability. (email,
7-4446, 5-0611[Fax] or MS P364).
Question #2:
Can I locate technical reports by report number in the Library
Catalog?
Yes. Using "Browse first words or numbers" search box,
select Technical Report No. from the pull-down, and enter the report
number, or as much of it as you have, including punctuation. If
there is not an exact match between what you entered and what is
in the catalog, the system will display a list of those report numbers
closest to what you requested in a "browse index." This can be useful
if you do not have the entire number correct (e.g., the actual report
number is LA-12345-MS, not just LA-12345.)
Or, using the "Word search" box, select Technical Report
No. from the pull-down, and enter pieces of the report number. Each
string of letters or numbers between punctuation is treated as a
"word". This can be useful in combination with another
search, e.g. Technical report no.=LA and Author =Hecker.
If you do not find the report you want in the library catalog
please check with Library staff to determine availability. (email,
7-4446, 5-0611[Fax] or MS P364).
Question #3:
Do reports in the Report Library circulate?
Unclassified reports circulate to Laboratory staff. Reports in
paper can be checked out for 28 days and those in microfiche for
7 days. Reports may be renewed if someone else has not requested
the report. Unclassified reports that are not publicly releasable may be consulted
in the Research Library.
For reports that do not circulate, we can have a copy made for
you -- for details, see Question #4.
Question #4:
What are my options for getting a personal copy of a report?
If the Library has the report, it can be photoreproduced.
Requests involving 25 pages or less we will make for you at no charge.
Over 25 pages, you can make your own copy or it can be sent to
IM-9 Imaging Services which charges for its services.
If the Library does not have the report and you locate
it through the NTIS database
you have two options:
(1) You can order the report through Otowi Station bookstore,
just as you would order a personal copy of a book;
(2) With a LANL purchase card, you can place your order directly
with NTIS. (NTIS
Ordering Information)
If the Library does not have the report and it is not
available from NTIS we will try to obtain a report for the
collection. Contact Library staff for assistance. (email,
7-4446, 5-0611[Fax] or MS P364)
Question #5
What Los Alamos technical reports are available electronically?
Over 10,000 Los Alamos technical reports are now available in
electronic form and can be accessed through the Library Catalog. These include
the LA- (formal) report series, LALP- series, and LA-UR series. These reports
go back to 1943 and were scanned from paper or microfiche. If a report you are
interested in is not yet available electronically, please contact us. (email,
7-4446, 5-0611[Fax] or MS P364)
See our instructions on
how to use electronic reports from the
Library Catalog.
Question #6:
As a Los Alamos researcher, how can I get my technical report
up on the Library's web server?
Please send electronic copies of reports to
la-pubs@lanl.gov. We prefer PDF or postscript
files, however most major file formats are acceptable, excepting
TeX. TeX files should be converted to postscript. Access
to the report will be restricted unless you return an OPSEC
form to us. Paper copies and electronic classified reports may be sent to
us through lab mail to P364.
Please contact Judy Garcia for assistance at la-pubs@lanl.gov.
Question #7:
How can I locate declassified Los Alamos reports that have
been approved for public release?
Check the Library Catalog.
If you do not find the report you want in the catalog please check
with Library staff to determine availability. (email,
7-4446, 5-0611[Fax] or MS P364).
Question #8:
What does the Library do to ensure propiretary or other
kinds of controlled information are not put up on the internet?
It is the Library's policy not to put proprietary material on
the Web.
The Library's policy, in conjunction with general Laboratory policy,
is to put up on the Internet only that technical information that
has been reviewed and determined to be publicly releasable.
For new reports, we always indicate to the author that we plan
to put the report up electronically and ask the author to inform
us if there are any objections.
